Places to Eat in Bratislava
If you want to dive straight into the local cuisine then there’s plenty around. You can chill out at beautiful cafes beside the River Danube and take advantage of the many tall buildings by dining in comfort at places like the Sky Bar & Restaurant. The name is very literal in its meaning at the views are spectacular. With tall windows surrounding the entire restaurant, you can see a lot of the famous sights and scenes whilst you sit down with the girls and try some lovely food. If you want to take it to another level, then UFO Restauracia literally looks like a UFO on top of a huge tower and you can’t miss it. Up here, you have an unmissable view of the entire city and can dine in pure class with friendly waiters attending your every need. The menu is vast and contains food to suit all with dishes ranging from Central European or Mediterranean to Asian.
If you’re a fussy eater, then don’t be put off, there’s still plenty of places that serve a good ol’ hamburger or pasta-based dishes. If this is the case, then BeAbout is an absolute must! Probably the best burger bar in the city, you can expect highly delicious burgers, toasties, sandwiches and sides in the centre of a modern and chic venue. Oh, this brilliant place also serves great cocktails right into the dead of night making it the ideal place to hang. If you fancy some Italian, then head over to Le Torri Pizza Pasta, where you’ll find plenty of… well… pizza and pasta amongst loads of other Italian favourites. Bratislava is a place that has a strong mix of restaurants that serve both meals that are very familiar to an average Brit as well as local, traditional foods. It really is the best of both worlds in this gorgeous city.
One of the best things about going away is trying new and exciting food and Bratislava provides some delicious experiences at good prices. We all know after a heavy night out food is top priority, especially with a weekend away! So, you can count on traditional Slovakian cuisine like Lokse- baked potato served with sausage soup (kapustnica) and bryndzové halušky, gnocchi-style potatoes to keep your tummies well looked after. These two dishes are some of Slovakia’s favourites and definitely worth a shot at least once.
Where to Shop in Bratislava?
Bratislava is littered with small independent shops with many housed in its beautiful, colourful 18th century buildings but in fact, the majority are spread across several modern malls. The most recently built is Central which has 150 shops with many being unique brands you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Eurovea is another huge and modern shopping mall which sits right beside the river so you can expect plenty good views. This is a great contender if you’re looking for a full day out as there’s not only shops but cafes and a kilometre of green space stretching along the riverside. Last but not least, is Aupark, arguably the most popular of the three big malls. Over two floors, there’s a whopping 240 shops and 25 restaurants. That’s a lot of shoes you can bring home!
Other than these huge indoor shopping getaways, you can expect some more quirky independent stores and can experience the Slovakian markets where fresh local produce is sold every day to workers in the city from as early as 6am. A place that stands out from the rest is Old Market Hall, a grand indoor marketplace which hosts the farmers market every Saturday morning where locally crafted beer can be found.
Guide to Bratislava Nightlife for Hen Weekends
Bratislava really comes to life after dark and proves to be a prime location for a large range of bars and clubs both modern and quirky. Its one of the top locations for stags to visit but is also hugely popular. Rumour has it that people from Vienna even hop over the border to have a night they can remember so it must really live up to its party-city status. From unusual underground clubs to chill rooftop bars, Bratislava has a good mix to any kind of party. A huge share of the party atmosphere takes place in Bratislava’s old town where you can enjoy warm and inviting bars hidden away down narrow streets.
Chilled Out Bars
Starting off with something slightly different is The Black Dog. Found right next to a tram tunnel, this quirky venue is as cosy as it gets and is popular with the locals. With low ceilings and low-lit lighting, this place has an incredible atmosphere where you can enjoy Slovakian wines and beers.
If you want a modern bar to visit, then Lemontree Sky Bar is a rooftop alternative that serves cocktails from 12pm to 12am. It may be more of an afternoon/evening place to have a few drinks but is definitely worth a visit with its amazing views of the city. There’s even a unique selection of 200 rums you can try in the basement.
If you’re wine lovers, then it has to be ‘Wine Not?’ This popular modern bar focuses purely on wines and has a selection of over 1,000 from all over the world. Easily found in the majestic and very pretty Hlavné námestie (the main square), you can enjoy a very homely atmosphere surrounded by walls filled with bottles of your favourite fluids.
The Clubs
If you don’t want to chill out and would rather be on the dance floor cracking out some killer moves, then the stand-out club in the old town is… The Club. Yeah, that’s the name as boring as it sounds but the experience you get with it definitely isn’t boring. This is the best club found anywhere in the city where you party hard all night til 5am. There’s a choice of shots, cocktails and beers and banging tunes well into the early hours. The perfect way to celebrate the bride-to-be’s last night of freedom!
Trafo Music Bar, located deep below the surface underneath Erdody’s Palace, is another great club that plays R&B, and house music, creating the perfect scene. Music Bar Priatelia is a pure throwback to the 80's/90's which hit tunes we’re sure you’ll know and love. Fuga is a lively yet dark club that can be reached from anywhere in the city centre where you can groove along to techno beats til early hours. It’s actually known to be the darkest club in Bratislava which stands out from the rest and gives it a terrific atmosphere.
What Are the Reasons to Visit Bratislava?
Visit the Old Town
You’ll be spending more of your weekend here so make the most out of absorbing the amazing architecture, huge squares and hidden, narrow streets. Michalska, Farska, Kapitulska, Venturska, Panska, and Laurinska are all the streets worth a visit to see some amazing sights and scenes.
Bratislava Castle
Probably the most iconic landmark in the city is the castle perched on top of a hill overlooking the old town. Here, you can grab some amazing views of the city all over including the river and the UFO bridge as well as learn about the nation’s history if that kind of thing interests you.
The UFO Bridge
The second most iconic landmark is probably the bridge and this is where the restaurant and bar can be found atop the tower. Sit back and chill out at the bar, cocktail in hand and indulge in the amazing views of the city in the best possible way.
The Street Art
Bratislava is a beautiful city filled with amazing historic buildings but a lot have been run down. However, there’s been an emergence of street art in recent years which sees many of these buildings beautified with interesting pieces of art. Zupne Namastie and under the UFO bridge are hotspots for these quirky colourful images.
Wine, Wine and More Wine!
There’s plenty of wine bars to pop into and there’s even a Slovak National Collection found next to the Old Town Hall. Here, you can sample 80 wines in 100 minutes as part of a guided tour before taking your favourite home with you. A sure way to get merry!
Beer Boat
A docked boat called the Dunajsky Pivovar serves craft beer on the top deck of a boat throughout the day and offers fabulous views of the River Danube, the old town and beyond. You can relax on their lounge chairs on the deck for hours, trying various beverages and tucking into delicious food.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Bratislava Hen Party
Bratislava may look old and tired but it’s the ultimate city at an affordable price. If you’re searching for cute buildings and cosy bars to chill out at before shuffling onto the dance floor, then Bratislava is as good as it gets. There’s plenty of fun exploring you can do in the day across the many city landmarks like the castle or the imposing UFO bridge. Breath-taking views of the river makes all the difference as a beautiful backdrop to your special weekend.
It really is worth checking out all of the buildings as they’re one of a kind. Take plenty of selfies at sites like St Martins Cathedral, The Blue Church or the Old Town Hall so you can look back on some amazing moments in years to come.
How to Get Around Bratislava?
Since most of you will most likely stay in the confines of the Old Town then luckily you wont need to do much distance when travelling. Everything you need will be easily within walking distance and there’s always the tram you can catch to get to places quicker. On top of this, there’s a trolleybus network that is easily navigable and affordable. Routes can be seen on signs and online with tickets only costing between €0.70-1.20 for 15-60 minutes. If you’re planning on getting around quite a bit on one of the days then passes are available to buy for €6.90 – 8 for 24-72 hours.
If you’re feeling green or just want to burn off the excess calories from last night’s wine sesh, then you can hire a bike from one of many docking stations. All you have to do is register online then it’s yours for 24 hours. The walk up the hill to the castle isn’t too demanding either and is right next to the Old Town area anyway.
